In the same year, to meet the needs of the Greco-Ital- ian War, city buses and their owners were commandeered to help supply the Greek Army. Only 18 of them returned. In addition, during World War II, many of the city buses that returned from the front were requisitioned by the oc- cupying forces, while others remained stationary due to
the high price of petrol. As a result, Thessaloniki’s public transport system was operated solely by trams. Af ter the war, the “Alliance of War-stricken Motorists” (SPA), an at- tempt was made to repair the requisitioned buses, while buses that had been used during the war by the Allies, or later under the Marshall Plan, were also provided.
